Housing tenure changes.
Evidence keeps coming that housing causes many of society’s problems and divisions.
This week Resolution Foundation show how far owner-occupation has fallen and why a settled home life can be so hard for low and middle income workers.
Many people we see at CA Reigate & Banstead are particularly affected by the shortage of affordable houses to rent.
As the foundation points out: Private renters consistently spend a higher proportion of their income on housing than any other tenure group with significant implications for both their immediate living standards and their long-term prospects.
And: Housing costs have a real effect on living standards over time….low and middle income groups have felt the squeeze most.
The chart shows the effect of housing cost changes over time on different groups* (hard to read but worth the squint).
*Low to middle income: in the bottom half of income distribution, larger part of income from work. Benefit reliant: income below the median and 20% from benefits. Higher income: above the median.
