Three questions society can no longer ignore.
Quality of life in Reigate & Banstead is high. A UK Prosperity Index* ranks the borough at #24 of 390. Yet many people with desperate housing problems need our help.
The biggest social problems are caused or made worse by inadequate housing or insecure tenure. This October an accumulation of high-profile evidence has led us to ask three questions we believe society can no longer ignore.
1) Does the country need more housing funded by the taxpayer?
Or can the present business model solve the crisis subject only to correcting a market failure? BBC Newsnight Homelessness in the 21st Century. Documentary No Place to Call Home
2) Does the private rental sector need tougher regulation?
Or will this mean landlords leave the market and make things even more difficult for tenants? Citizens Advice Safe and secure, a renter’s right.
3) Is a secure home a basic human right?
Or restricted to those who have earned it and reached a minimum income level? Palme d’Or Cannes Film Festival 2016 I, Daniel Blake.
