‘Everything else falls apart’.
The number grows each quarter. Everyday 170 UK families have to leave their homes. Two stats from ‘Eviction’, a cool radio analysis of the meaning of homelessness in Britain and the US today*.
Also chilling. Attitudes to eviction it seems are becoming more matter-of-fact (worse in America but we’re going their way.)
At Citizens Advice Reigate & Banstead we can confirm growing numbers are facing actual or threatened homelessness.
Our volunteers know from clients in the office, on the phone and in court how devastating it is to lose the security of a home. (Our advice online covers all housing problems)
We’re pleased the media are now giving this more notice. “Without stable shelter everything else falls apart”, the radio show ends. ‘Time out of mind’ starring Richard Gere makes the same point. #homeless tells its own story.
In the end we all pay for social (in)security whatever our attitudes.
