A word from the wise would improve chances of success.
Practical advice from people who really know what it’s like to go it alone could make the difference between success and failure for potential local entrepreneurs.
That’s the message of Better Self-Employment, a new report from Citizens Advice Reigate & Banstead, published 27 November, our District Training Day.
More people are working for themselves or thinking about it. The attractions include being in control of your life and planning work around family responsibilities. But not everyone who takes the step understands the risks of leaving a steady job or what’s involved in being self-employed.
The report shows early-stage freelancers having problems with customer and supplier contracts, cash flow, bogus self-employment and even well-meaning official support.
To improve their chances of success, local business groups could set up a ‘buddy’ mentoring scheme where established self-employed people share experience.
CA volunteer and author of the report John Dougill said:
“For many, going it alone is the best thing they ever did. But at CA we see people who get things wrong. Problems build up that affect their business but also their lives and families.
“There’s a lot of good advice locally and online for people offering technical and professional services. What seems to be missing is the right help for people starting hands-on services for home and business.
“Most of them are skilled and enthusiastic and it’s a great loss to themselves and the community when things go awry. We hope our report strikes a chord with local groups who could help make things happen.”
Elaine Parr, Citizens Advice Reigate & Banstead District Manager said:
“The employment group report is another example of how our dedicated and trained volunteers work hard for the community. We exist to help people solve their problems but also to influence local policy for the better.”
