Top of the agenda at a meeting on 24 February of Redhill Citizens Advice volunteers was how to advise clients on claiming Universal Credit.
The new benefit reached Surrey for the first time this month. It replaces six existing working age benefits which will be gradually phased out.
To begin with just a small number of new claimants will be eligible. Our Training Manager explained the conditions and led a discussion on how the amount an individual receives is decided.
UC is a thoroughly modern benefit. As well as moving to a simpler structure it must be claimed on-line (with a telephone service for vulnerable people).
Everyone can check out the detail at citizensadvice.org.uk, call the Universal Credit Helpline 0845 600 0723, or go to www.gov.uk/universal-credit.
