Problems multiply.
No week in 2016 has been without a worrying new story about social care.
In recent days, doubts have even been raised about the sector’s viability. Providers point to a funding crisis caused by lower local government budgets and a higher minimum wage. Today, the BBC reports ministers considering a council tax rise to help solve the problem.
Citizens Advice research has focused on the experience of buyers and users. It has found problems that apparently stem from poor charging and payment mechanisms and pre-purchase information.
Earlier this month the Competition and Markets Authority announced an investigation into the market citing the CA work.
The CMA says it will deal with ‘consumer protection issues’ not funding policy or quality regulation. But it also promises (how could it not?) to look at the consequences of current policy and regulation for the sustainability of care home provision.
Citizens Advice has welcomed the announcement and proposed areas for investigation including: information about extra charges, deposit protection, official support if people have problems and pre-purchase information.
In the coming months Citizens Advice Reigate & Banstead as part of the national CAB network will carefully monitor this vital service. We look forward to helping people with problems and taking part in the policy debate.
