Self-employed? Or status doubtful?
Someone we heard from works for a school transport provider contracted to a local authority. During term time she puts in 20 hours a week as a school escort. Her role is to collect children with special needs from home and take responsibility for their safe journey to school or children’s centre and return later in the day.
Officially this person is self-employed. She is paid by the contractor and receives none of the normal staff benefits.
But she isn’t really in business on her own account.
Her employment status is doubtful to say the least.
In brief she may well be a victim of bogus self-employment. She seems to have none of the flexibility that should be part of true self-employment but equally none of the benefits of employment.
What do you think?
