Important addition to mental health services.
Safe Haven Redhill opened earlier this year and filled a large gap in local mental health services.
For the first time people experiencing an emotional or mental health crisis can get help and support on evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Carers are welcome too. It’s informal and a lot like a coffee shop. There’s always a warm welcome and a safe space.
Dropping in for a chat and a hot drink can make all the difference. But professional advice is on hand so people can be sure of getting the help they need.
At Citizens Advice Reigate & Banstead more and more clients are dealing with mental health conditions when they ask for help with other problems. So the introduction of safe havens looks like a great step forward.
We understand Safe Haven Redhill is funded for a year. Its future depends on the health benefits it provides including helping cut pressure on A&E services. That makes sense.
But we hope it will be given enough time to show how it can improve mental health services which everyone knows have been underfunded for far too long.

Safe Haven Redhill is provided by Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with East Surrey Clinical Commissioning Group and Richmond Fellowship, a charity that specialises in helping people with mental ill-health. It joins a group of similar services in Surrey and Hampshire including at Epsom. We’re grateful to Olive Aherne and Richmond Fellowship for an excellent contribution to our mental health volunteers and staff training day on 27 April.
