Citizens Advice service supports community rehabilitation.
In the Queen’s Speech the government sets out far-reaching prison reform. There will be robust debate in the House and country about their merit and viability.
At Citizens Advice Reigate & Banstead we believe wider discussion and public understanding will benefit a service we support in a variety of ways.
For many years we have had a strong relationship with HMP High Down near Banstead. Until 2015 we provided a full Advice service plus follow-up casework. The project was well-supported by prisoners and prison officers, helped the mental wellbeing of prisoners and for many was an important part of their successful resettlement.
Now we are available to individuals on request and through families. We hope to resume the full service when funding allows.
Problems don’t disappear when someone is convicted and begins a prison term. Advice on finance, housing, benefits and relationships may be even more important for that person’s peace of mind and genuine rehabilitation.
