Floor covering provides safety and comfort
It happens only too often to people on an insecure low income. When our client made contact last month she faced a bunch of hard issues.
She was moving with her asthmatic young son from temporary accommodation to a permanent rented flat. All available money was spent on moving essential items to the new home and repaying rent arrears. She had lost her part-time job.
The immediate problem was lack of any floor covering in the flat.
Poor finishing of skirting boards in the bedrooms meant drafts and possible infestation could put her son’s health at risk. When he saw daylight through the woodwork, he became fearful that creatures would crawl in as he slept.
Our adviser helped get the housing manager to rectify some of the faults. She also suggested a charity that would consider making a grant for suitable flooring. The repairs and a £400 grant made material improvements possible.
It was a better start than at first seemed likely.
