A surge in universal credit issues is the standout number in CARBS data comparing the first 6 months of 2018 and 2019 – see chart below.
UC, which over time will completely replace 6 ‘legacy’ benefits, reached Surrey later than many other parts of the country.
All the leading issue categories except employment increased year-on-year. Universal credit accounted for two fifths of a total 21% increase.
The data give an insight into the work and character of our volunteer advisers. Helping with a big rise in client issues (though not necessarily client numbers in each category) and a complex new benefit has required extra time, training and true commitment.
