Taylor Review: ideas to improve work and social justice.
The government-commissioned independent review* of modern working practices has quickly provoked a lot of negative stuff from interest groups.
It was a ‘missed opportunity’. It let down workers it sought to protect. It said nothing about enforcement.
Those willing to take a wider view however should agree with Citizens Advice: it’s “a decent first step”.
In our Talk Self-Employ theme we will listen to and report views about how Taylor wants to tackle the aspects of insecure work: low pay, the unfair rewards of flexibility, digital platforms and the rest.
But we hope everyone can accept his (and the government’s) basic premise:
Taylor seems to be criticised because he looks at the problem from all sides. Yes, the work prospects of many are poor. But yes too, government must consider the linked prospects of the economy.
If they don’t now gather dust (50/50 chance?) Taylor’s ideas could do much to improve the quality of work and social justice.
