There’s so much online about the requirements and responsibilities of being self-employed it’s hard to know where to start.
One option is the Citizens Advice Check List.
It spells out the different forms of self-employment. It covers the requirements and responsibilities to do with tax, insurance, health and safety etc. And it links to other sources of help. These things are really the ‘outside’ aspects of the job – how to deal fairly and work with the authorities.
But it’s just as important to have a clear idea about the ‘inside’ aspects – how you’re going to work and whether you can make a living.
This can be tough. But becoming a sole trader shouldn’t be a leap in the dark. It’s worth thinking ahead and asking yourself some key questions such as:
Tough questions, but important. If you have the answers, do some sums and give it a go. After all, you know how to do the actual job.
