A wave of possession claims could follow expiry of the government’s eviction ban introduced to protect tenants during lockdown.
That’s the claim of housing organisations worried that the removal of protection could lead to a big rise in homelessness.
Shelter said: At least 170,000 people have already been threatened with eviction, and we fear this is only going to get worse when the eviction ban lifts, the furlough scheme ends and the recession bears down*.
In a statement to the Observer newspaper (panel) the housing department said it would support tenants in difficulty; landlords would have to provide new information about the impact of Covid on tenants that judges could take into account.**
If the ban ends as planned on 24 August, both support and ‘new rules’ will be critical.
