Latest price rises imposed by two of the biggest energy companies have led Moneysupermarket, a price comparison website, to say “we are now officially in price rise season”. *
British Gas is raising prices for customers on a standard variable tariff by 5.5%, an average of £60. EDF’s latest rise is 2.7% on electricity prices, adding £16 to bills. But this comes after the supplier raised prices TWICE in 2017, by 8.4% in March and 9% in June. **
Citizens Advice claims there are “serious question marks over whether these price rises are genuinely justified”.
The government must act quickly to bring in its cap on energy prices. As long as it delays, the industry seems to be taking the chance to increase bills ahead of price intervention.
