HMRC withdraws demand.
A client with mental health problems will not have to pay back more than £2400 in overpaid tax credits received during tax year 2015-16.
HMRC made its decision last month following the direct involvement of Citizens Advice Reigate & Banstead on her behalf.
The debt came about after a change in income at a time when her health was also affected by other medical and social problems. The client’s GP explained she had suffered mental health problems for many years and was unable to cope with her debt.
Elaine Parr, District Manager Citizens Advice Reigate & Banstead said:
“This is a very good outcome for our client. She was becoming increasingly anxious about the repayment demand and her health was deteriorating.
“It’s also a great example of how Citizens Advice helps improve people’s lives. Credit goes to all our volunteers who work so hard in understanding this kind of situation and following up to get the problems sorted out.”
