New protocol launched by Citizens Advice and local authorities.
The number of householders falling behind with council tax payments has risen to a worrying level. Helping them get back on track is in everyone’s interests.
Which is why Citizens Advice and the Local Government Association have jointly launched a new Council Tax Protocol.
By setting out good practice at each stage of the tax collection process, it will help councils in England improve the experience of residents in arrears while collecting what is owed.
In research last year Citizens Advice discovered that many people in arrears found their council’s policies were actually making it harder for them to sort things out. Meanwhile enforcement companies – bailiffs – were often seen as using harsh or aggressive tactics as we reported in March.
Now, often in cooperation with Citizens Advice, councils signing up to the protocol aim to agree realistic repayment plans with taxpayers.
This is the best way to help people avoid eviction and financial stress but also help councils maximise the amount of tax they collect.
At Citizens Advice Reigate & Banstead we’re looking forward to discussing the new protocol with members and officials at Reigate & Banstead Borough Council.
