Reigate and Banstead Borough Council have allocated £20,000 to a pilot project to combat fuel poverty this winter.
The council says more people are having to choose between food and fuel, Its fund will support residents, young and old, who are most vulnerable to the cold. Residents on income-based benefits and those with disabilities or long-term health conditions are eligible.
The project will provide residents in need with pre-paid utility meter top-ups. It will work with food banks, older-age organisations and those helping people with money issues such as Citizens Advice and Community Debt Advice.
