The BBC has begun asking the public what ought to change as the world comes out of Covid-19. Radio and podcasts are reporting and sharing ideas as Rethink. What would make society stronger to face new health and economic shocks?
We strongly support this initiative.
Since April, and sometime before, we’ve been highlighting influential views about key workers. Many are in health or social care, delivery drivers or in essential retail. Many are on insecure contracts, undervalued, often underpaid. Each week we clapped them but until Covid had mainly taken their work for granted.
Like the BBC, we are asking what happens next.
Citizens Advice campaigns for fair treatment at work and an adequate social safety net when the need arises. At the moment, this includes more secure contracts, improving universal credit and ending the benefits cap.
Post Covid, we will all be stronger if we start to value key workers properly.
